Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen scored twice Sunday to help Ajax
beat FC Groningen 3-0 and reduce FC Twente's lead atop the Dutch
league standings to four points.
Demy de Zeeuw and Luis Suarez provided the passes for
Vertonghen, who scored both goals with headers. Siem de Jong got
the other for Ajax, which stayed second in the standings with 70
points.
Otman Bakkal also netted two goals in PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win
at VVV-Venlo. Balazs Dzsudzsak and Danny Koevermans were also on
target for PSV while Ruben Schaken and Ruud Boymans replied for VVV
with second-half goals.
FC Twente, which beat Sparta Rotterdam 3-0 Saturday, tops the
standings with 74 points. PSV is third with 69 points.
Also Sunday, Feyenoord drew 0-0 against NEC Nijmegen and FC
Utrecht beat last-place RKC Waalwijk 2-0 on first-half goals by
Dries Mertens and Michael Silberbauer for its fourth straight win.
Defending champion AZ Alkmaar also won 3-0 against Heracles
Almelo Saturday while Vitesse Arnhem overpowered Willem II 2-1.
Roda JC beat SC Heerenveen 4-2 Saturday.
