Eq. Guinea appeals being stripped of World Cup win

FIFA says Equatorial Guinea will appeal being stripped of a World Cup qualifying win against Cape Verde for fielding an ineligible player.

Cape Verde was awarded a 3-0 victory after losing 4-3 in Malabo on March 24. No player in Equatorial Guinea's starting lineup was born in the country.

FIFA says the African federation ''has informed the FIFA Appeal Committee of its intention to appeal against that decision.''

FIFA did not specify the appeal hearing date, or identify the ineligible player.

A verdict is likely before the teams meet again June 8 in Praia, Cape Verde.

Equatorial Guinea is the fourth African team charged by FIFA over ineligible players in the current qualifying phase.

If the appeal is lost, it will be last in a four-team group led by Tunisia.
