El Salvador has called up defender Steven Purdy for the first time in its 23-man squad for the Gold Cup in June.

The 26-year-old Portland Timbers defender was born in California to a Salvadoran mother.

El Salvador coach Ruben Israel left out defender Marcelo Messias despite the naturalized Brazilian having played in the recent 1-0 friendly win in Cuba and 3-2 home defeat to Jamaica.

There is also no place for Christian Castillo, a mainstay of former squads and a key player for national champion Alianza.

El Salvador will play its final warm-up game against Honduras in Houston on Sunday, before facing Mexico, Cuba and Costa Rica in Group A in the June 5-25 tournament in the United States.
