Ecuador holds Argentina to draw

Argentina salvaged a 1-1 draw against Ecuador on Tuesday in the thin air of Quito, keeping it top of South America's World Cup qualifying standings.

Sergio Aguero scored for Argentina with a penalty in the fourth minute, but Segundo Castillo headed an equalizer in the 17th.

Argentina improved to 27 points from 14 matches.

Colombia is second in the group with 26 points from 13 games following a 2-0 victory against Peru on Tuesday.

Ecuador is in third with 22 points after 13 matches.

The top four teams in the group advance automatically to next year's World Cup in Brazil. The fifth-place team faces a playoff for a berth and Brazil - the host - qualifies automatically.
