Ecuador defeats Peru 2-0 in qualifying
Edison Mendez and Cristian Benitez both scored in the second half Tuesday to guide Ecuador to a 2-0 victory over Peru in South American World Cup qualifying.
Mendez scored in the 69th minute, collecting a pass from Benitez to beat Peru keeper Raul Fernandez. Benitez got his goal in the 88th, set up by Jaime Ayovi.
Ecuador moved on to six points from three matches, while Peru has three from three matches. Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have played one fewer game than the other six teams in South American qualifying.
