Defending champion FC Twente won for the first time this season by beating Vitesse Arnhem 3-0 in the third round of the Dutch league on Saturday.
Marc Janko opened the scoring in the 58th minute before Luuk de Jong provided two further goals to give new coach Michel Preud'homme his first goals and victory of the season.
Also, Mounir El Hamdaoui netted twice and Luis Suarez got the other goal to help Ajax beat Roda JC 3-0 and move atop the standings.
Ajax has seven points, one ahead of PSV Eindhoven, which was inactive on Saturday. NEC Nijmegen also has six.
Bas Dost scored twice for SC Heerenveen, which beat NAC Breda 3-1 to notch its first win of the season. Kees Luijckx was also on target for Heerenveen.
Andreas Granqvist and Thomas Enevoldsen had the goals as FC Groningen dismissed De Graafschap 2-1. Rydell Poepon scored a consolation for the losing side.
Newcomer Excelsior Rotterdam secured its second win of the season to go joint second in the league standings after beating NEC Nijmegen 4-1.
On Sunday, PSV hosts AZ Alkmaar, while Feyenoord is at Heracles Almelo.
