Dubai's Al Wasl signs Australian striker Porta

Al Wasl has signed Australian striker Richard Porta to join the team coached by Diego Maradona.

Al Wasl club said in a statement Tuesday that the 28-year-old Porta has signed a one-year contract from Nacional in Uruguay. Other terms of the agreement were not revealed.

Porta was born in Sydney but grew up in Uruguay. He spent the first six years of his career at River Plate in Montevideo before moving to Italian club Siena.

Al Wasl has had mixed fortunes since former Argentina great Maradona took over as coach in July. The team was thrashed 5-0 by Dubai in the Etisalat Cup last week, but opened the league season with a 3-0 win over Sharjah on Sunday.
