Drogba shortlisted for African player of year
Strikers Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o and Asamoah Gyan were included on the African football confederation's shortlist of five nominees for the continent's player of the year award.
Salomon Kalou and Seydou Keita completed Saturday's list, which CAF says will be cut to a final group of three on Dec. 11 ahead of the Dec. 20 vote. CAF announced an initial group of 10 contenders last month.
Algeria, African champions Egypt and Ghana are in the running for national team of the year.
Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Drogba is a two-time winner of the individual award and helped Chelsea to the Premier League title last season. He finished as the league's top scorer with 29 goals in 32 games.
Eto'o of Cameroon won Italy's Serie A and the Champions League with Inter Milan. He came second to Drogba for the African player of the year prize last year.
Gyan was a star of Ghana's run to the World Cup quarterfinals - the best performance by an African team at the tournament in South Africa.
Kalou is another Ivory Coast and Chelsea forward, while midfielder Keita plays for Barcelona and Mali. Both are considered outsiders for the award.
Egypt recovered from the disappointment of missing the World Cup with its third straight African Cup of Nations title at the end of January in Angola. It was a record seventh title for the Pharaohs.
Algeria reached its first World Cup since 1986 in South Africa, and the semifinals of the Cup of Nations. Ghana became just the third African team after Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002 to reach the last eight in a World Cup.
Winners will be decided in a vote of the national team coaches or technical directors of the 53 countries that make up CAF. The awards take into account performances in the period January to November 2010, CAF said.
