The Reds have slipped out of the Champions League places over the last couple of seasons, but have started the current campaign in style. A frustrating opening day draw with Sunderland has been forgotten and impressive wins over Arsenal and Bolton have left Kenny Dalglish's men third in the table. Downing, a summer signing from Aston Villa, has been one of the key factors in Liverpool's form and, without wanting to get too carried away, he thinks the future is bright. "There is a feel-good factor," he said. "We started the season very well but we've got a tough run of games coming up, starting with Stoke (on Saturday). "If we keep playing the way we are at Liverpool, we've got a hell of a chance of being in the top bracket. "But we take one game at a time." Downing's performances at club level also led to him starting in England's Euro 2012 qualifying double-header against Bulgaria and Wales. The winger said: "It's been a good start to the season for me for club and country. "Maybe I'm a little bit more confident on the England stage now and playing well at club level helps. "Getting a run of games helps your confidence and getting used to the players around me. "It would be nice to stay in the England team and I've just got to keep playing well and hopefully that will happen."
