Ian Dowie has been hired as manager of Hull to replace Phil Brown.
Brown was fired Monday with Hull (5-15-9) 19th in the 20-team league with 24 points and headed for relegation. The clubs has nine games remaining and is three points from 17th place, the last spot to avoid getting sent down to the League Championship.
Brown led Hull to the top division for the first time in its 104-year history in the 2008-09 season and acquired American forward Jozy Altidore on loan last summer.
Dowie, a former Northern Ireland forward, is a former manager of Charlton, Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers. He spent time on the Newcastle coaching staff last season as the club as relegated.
