Borussia Dortmund's Poland defender Lukasz Piszczek is expected to be out for five months after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right hip to remove cartilage damage.
Piszczek is one of Dortmund's key players and helped the team reach the Champions League final, where it lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich. Dortmund was also runner-up in the Bundesliga and will again play in the Champions League next season.
Piszczek's injury is another blow to Dortmund, which has lost talented midfielder Mario Goetze to Bayern Munich and defender Felipe Santana to Schalke, while striker Robert Lewandowski looks set to depart for Bayern.
Dortmund's only major signing so far is defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Werder Bremen.
