Di Matteo plays down Schalke's chances of signing Khedira
Roberto Di Matteo has played down Schalke's chances of signing Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.
The 27-year-old Germany international has confirmed he will leave the Bernabeu when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Schalke are believed to be sitting in pole position to lure him back to the Bundesliga but, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich having been linked with him in the past, Di Matteo understands that they face a fight to sign him.
"There is not a single coach in the world who would not want to have a player of his caliber in his team," the Italian told Sport1.
"The door is wide open for Khedira. However, I think he is spoilt for choice when it comes to picking his next destination. It will be very difficult to bring him to Schalke."
Khedira joined Madrid from Stuttgart in the summer of 2010 and has since made over over 150 official appearances for the Spanish side, winning La Liga in 2011-12 and the Champions League in 2013-14.
