Dempsey paired at forward with Altidore
Clint Dempsey has been paired at forward with Jozy Altidore for the United States' last exhibition game before leaving for the World Cup in South Africa.
Dempsey was pushed up from his usual midfield spot against Turkey on Saturday in the absence of Charlie Davies, still recovering from injuries sustained in an October car crash. Altidore was playing his first match since April 24, when he received a red card playing for Hull after giving Sunderland's Alan Hutton a head butt because the defender threw the ball at him.
Clarence Goodson was given the start at central defender in a surprise, replacing Oguchi Onyewu. On Tuesday, Onyewu appeared rusty in the Americans' 4-2 loss to the Czechs. Onyewu went 65 minutes in that match, his first since tearing his left patellar tendon on Oct. 14 in the final World Cup qualifier.
Jay DeMerit also started in central defense, his first appearance following an abdominal strain that had sidelined him since April 17.
Captain Carlos Bocanegra was shifted to left back from center, the spot he occupied at the Confederations Cup last summer. It was his first match since sports hernia surgery on May 5. Jonathan Spector was on the right, his usual position with the U.S. but opposite the left back spot he filled at West Ham after Herita Ilunga's calf injury.
Regular starter Tim Howard was in goal after resting a quadriceps strain early in the training camp that started May 17.
Michael Bradley and Ricardo Clark started in central midfield, with Landon Donovan on the right and Benny Feilhaber on the left.
Onyewu was on the bench along with right back Steve Cherundolo; left back Jonathan Bornstein; midfielders DaMarcus Beasley, Maurice Edu, Stuart Holden and Jose Torres; forwards Robbie Findley, Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez; and goalkeepers Marcus Hahnemann and Brad Guzan.
For Turkey, midfielder Hamit Altintop joined the starting lineup after playing for Bayern Munich in last Saturday's 2-0 loss to Inter Milan in the European Champions League final.
Stoke's Tuncay Sanli started at forward with Toulouse's Colin Kazim-Richards. Fenerbahce's Emre Belozoglu was in the midfield with Galatasaray's Arda Turan and Sabri Sarioglu, and Trabzonspor's Selcuk Inan. The starting defenders were Galatasaray's Servet Cetin, Gokhan Zan and Caglar Birinci. Fenerbahce's Volkan Demirel was in goal.
