De Laet has point to prove
The 22-year-old will add some defensive cover to the Canaries as they look to stay in the top flight. De Laet joined the Red Devils from Stoke in January 2009, making his United first-team debut against Hull on the final day of the 2008/2009 season. After short loan stints in the Championship with Sheffield United, Preston and then spending last season with Portsmouth, De Laet believes testing himself against Premier League strikers on a regular basis can only bode well for his future hopes at Old Trafford. "Regular football at first-team level is invaluable and although it might not have been the best thing for me personally to play for three different clubs in one season, it worked out really well in the end," De Laet told skysports.com. "If I can gain some experience and play as many games as I can in the Premier League this season then I can go back there [United] and give it a good go at getting in the first team. "If all goes well for me with Norwich, then it will be up to me to prove to the boss [Sir Alex Ferguson] that I am good enough to wear the [United] shirt, but for now I just need to concentrate on doing well for Norwich. "I have still got another year left on my contract after this season, so I have got until the summer of 2013 to prove myself at United. "It is all in my own hands really because if I do well for Norwich this season it might trigger a new contract for me back at United, but if not I will still have the last year of my contract to show what I am capable of there." Canaries boss Paul Lambert had been quick to bolster his promotion-winning squad, also signing forwards James Vaughan, Steve Morison and Brighton winger Elliott Bennett. With all the initial £37million of additional television revenue promised to the Scot for team building, there are set to be a few more additions yet ahead of Norwich's first top-flight campaign since 2004/2005. Huddersfield boss Lee Clark, once assistant manager at Carrow Road, has rejected suggestions they will sell winger Anthony Pilkington to the Canaries, who are widely reported to have lodged a £2million offer. While Leeds are holding out for an ambitious £8million deal for Scotland international Robert Snodgrass, Norwich are also in need of more defensive cover. England Under-21 international Stephen Caulker is likely to be loaned out again by Tottenham, with Spurs boss Harry Redknapp revealing the Canaries' interest. Norwich are believed to be monitoring developments at West Ham, where veteran centre-back Matthew Upson - born in Suffolk and who came through the Ipswich Centre of Excellence before joining Luton - is expected to leave following the Irons' relegation.
