Dalglish savours Brighton encounter
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish believes tonight's Carling Cup third-round tie at Brighton can help put to bed their woeful performance at the weekend.
The nine-man Reds were humbled 4-0 by Tottenham with their second successive defeat prompting much analysis about what went wrong.
And although the team he picks to face the npower Championship high-fliers - which could include captain Steven Gerrard for the first time in six months - will be a different line-up he is looking for a response from the players.
"I think we have exhausted Sunday with what we have said," said Dalglish.
"It didn't please anybody and the players were really disappointed. We don't think we played well, even with 11 men we didn't play well.
"Maybe that's the standard we are setting for ourselves but we are not going to settle for anything less.
"We will look to do the best we possibly can in every game, we won't always play well but we will always try our best.
"We are pleased to be in the Carling Cup and our intention is to stay in it for as long as we possibly can," he added.
"We will have a strong team out tomorrow night and we will treat it in the same manner as we treated the Exeter game.
"If we go there with the same attitude then we will give ourselves the best chance to win."
It is for that reason he will not make the same mistake predecessor Roy Hodgson did 12 months ago when his under-strength side suffered a humiliating exit to League Two Northampton at a similar stage.
"Brighton are doing fantastically well after getting promotion and were sitting on top of the table until they lost to Leicester," the Scot told liverpoolfc.tv.
"It will be a difficult game. We have got to get ourselves right, concentrate on ourselves, do our homework on Brighton and take forward it from there.
"We will approach it properly and professionally. They were totally professional when we played at Exeter and we'll have to do the same again if we want to get a result."
New signing Sebastian Coates is set for his first start since joining from Uruguay club Nacional, having made his earlier-than-expected debut as a substitute against Spurs.
The centre-back is likely to slot into defence in place of Daniel Agger, who could be out for four weeks after breaking at least one rib on Sunday.
"Daniel has got a fractured rib, so he's struggling a bit," added Dalglish.
The Denmark player's agent Per Steffensen told sporten.tv2.dk: "It's the worst possible news."
He added on tipsbladet.dk: "Daniel is way down now and I certainly sympathise with him.
"He will miss the two (international) matches against Cyprus and Portugal and there is a match against Manchester United (on October 15) he also misses.
"It's insanely annoying."
Brighton manager Gus Poyet admits his side will need to play the "perfect" game if they are to beat Liverpool.
The Seagulls, flying high in the npower Championship and unbeaten at their new Amex Stadium, got past top-flight opposition in Sunderland in the second round.
But Poyet knows his players face another step up in class against an Anfield outfit who see the competition as a realistic chance of lifting a trophy this season.
The Uruguayan is determined to enjoy his 100th game in charge of Brighton - and says his players should do the same.
"When the draw happened it was like a celebration here, like we'd won the league again," he said.
"I'm not going to change that because they have a great chance to play against a top-class team.
"There is no better feeling for a player who was playing in League One three months ago to play in front of 22,000 people against Liverpool. I'm not going to try to bring down those emotions.
"A team in the situation Liverpool are in, this is a cup which can be very important. It can be a trophy in the cabinet so they will take it very seriously.
"Saying that, they have injuries and suspensions so it will be a different team. But I know any player who comes in, like Dirk Kuyt or Craig Bellamy, will be top class so it's going to be difficult.
"On top of that if they react (to Sunday's defeat), play well and have the right attitude then we are going to suffer.
"We need to be at the top of our game and be a bit lucky, and maybe if Liverpool aren't then we've got a chance. If both teams play at the same level Liverpool should win because they are quicker, stronger and better technically.
"We have to make sure we are better than them on the day and take our chances. You need practically the perfect game to beat them - but we are going to try."
Poyet could hand a debut to former Spain midfielder Vicente, who joined as a free agent earlier this month, while 38-year-old assistant manager Mauricio Taricco is set to play at left-back.
