Racing Santander has signed Argentine coach Hector Cuper to lead the Spanish club next season.

Cuper agreed to a one-year contract on Wednesday.

The 55-year-old Cuper coached Greek club Aris before resigning in January following a poor string of league results.

Since guiding Valencia to the 2001 Champions League final, Cuper has led six teams, including Inter Milan, Real Betis, Parma and he led Mallorca to the 2003 Copa del Rey trophy. He has also taken charge of Georgia's national team.

Marcelino Garcia Toral was the previous coach. Having kept the club in topflight football, he joined Sevilla because Santander was in disarray under current owner Ahsan Ali Syed with players complaining that their wages hadn't been paid.
