'Cubo' Torres' rights purchased by MLS, loaned to Chivas Guadalajara
Erick "Cubo" Torres' fate -- for the next six months, at least -- has been resolved.
Major League Soccer has exercised its option to purchase the Mexico national team striker but will immediately send him back to Chivas Guadalajara on a six-month loan, the Mexican club announced Thursday.
Torres, 21, had spent the past year and a half on loan from Guadalajara to recently disbanded MLS side Chivas USA, scoring 22 goals in 44 league games. Although Torres' new MLS club has yet to be announced, Goal USA reported Wednesday that the Houston Dynamo have stepped up to meet the $7.5 million asking price for Torres.
Chivas' statement read: "Club Deportivo Guadalajara informs that Major League Soccer (MLS) has taken up the buy-out option on forward Erick Estefano Torres Padilla. As part of the negotiation, the player was ceded for six months, on a loan deal, to Guadalajara."
The move could represent the best of both worlds for Torres, who will look to help Chivas stave off relegation during the upcoming Clausura before a summer move back to MLS, where he has emerged as one of the league's most marketable young stars.
