Coppinger inspires Doncaster

A late deflected goal from James Coppinger saw Doncaster edge past Bradford 2-1 in their friendly match at Valley Parade.

Rovers, newly promoted back to the Championship, showed attacking intent from the off and produced the game's first goal on 25 minutes when a neat corner routine allowed David Cotterill to slot home.

The Bantams rallied well and twice went close before the break through James Hanson efforts - the towering striker seeing a header drift wide and a close-range chance blocked well by Tommy Spurr.

Ten minutes after the break, the hosts had their equaliser when Garry Thompson surged onto a sloppy back-pass from Spurr and the rebound from Jonny Maxted's attempted clearance looped into the net.

Alert defending from James Meredith preserved parity as he hacked off the line from Kyle Bennett, but four minutes from time Coppinger's effort took a ricochet to wrong-foot Jon McLaughlin and bag Rovers victory.
