Copa Libertadores Roundup, May 4
Defending champion Internacional crashed out of the Copa Libertadores final 16 with a 2-1 home loss to Uruguay's Penarol on Wednesday as four Brazilian clubs were eliminated on a day of shock results.
Colombia's Once Caldas won 2-0 at Cruzeiro, Paraguay's Libertad beat Fluminense 3-0 and Chile's Universidad Catolica downed Gremio 1-0 as all three victors made the quarterfinals.
The results left Santos as Brazil's sole survivor in the last eight. Santos completed a 1-0 aggregate victory over Mexico's America on Tuesday.
The three remaining matches in the final 16 - Liga vs. Velez (0-3), Junior vs. Chiapas (1-1) and Cerro Porteno vs. Estudiantes (0-0) - finish Thursday.
After the first leg was drawn 1-1, Oscar gave Inter the lead against Penarol with a left-footed strike when Leandro Damiao delivered a high ball into his path in just the second minute.
Inter controlled possession in the opening period, but suffered a blow in the first minute of the second half when Alejandro Martinuccio burst into the box from the left and volleyed a bouncing ball into the top corner.
Juan Manuel Olivera then scored a crucial second away goal for Penarol six minutes later to leave Inter needing two goals to survive.
The Brazilian team laid siege to Penarol's goal for the final 30 minutes, but goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa tipped over from Andres D'Alessandro and saved at point blank range from substitute Tinga to preserve the lead.
Damiao also hit the post in stoppage time as Inter bowed out.
Elsewhere, Diego Amaya and Dayro Moreno scored second-half goals as Once Caldas overturned a 2-1 loss in the first leg to beat Cruzeiro.
Both teams were reduced to 10 men before the goals went in. Roger was sent off for Cruzeiro in the 31st minute and Carlos Carbonero was shown a red card for Once Caldas in the 57th.
Both teams, including substitutes, were involved in an on-pitch fight at the end of the match, with pushes and punches reportedly thrown.
Libertad rallied from even further behind with a powerful second half showing against Brazilian league champion Fluminense, which had won the opening match 3-1 in Brazil.
Rodrigo Rojas started the comeback with a 58th-minute strike, Miguel Samudio added the all-important second in the 86th and Jose Nunez made it 3-0 in stoppage time.
Universidad Catolica made no mistakes with its win over Gremio after taking the first leg 2-1 in Brazil.
Milovan Mirosevic hit the night's winner with a header just before the final whistle to complete the 3-1 aggregate victory.
So far, the quarterfinal lineup in Latin America's top club competition is: Once Caldas vs. Santos; Penarol vs. Catolica; Libertad vs. Velez or Liga; Junior or Chiapas vs. Cerro Porteno or Estudiantes.
