Bundesliga club Cologne says defender Kevin Pezzoni needs an operation on a broken nose after being attacked during the city's carnival celebrations.

Cologne says Pezzoni will undergo an operation to reset the nose Thursday. He will receive a special mask to allow him train, though the club says a precise date for his return can only be determined after the surgery.

Media reported that Pezzoni was struck in the face Sunday without provocation by an unknown assailant in Huerth, a town bordering Cologne.

Pezzoni told the Cologne-based Express newspaper that he ''just stood there as someone tipped me from behind. ... Then I got hit in the face.''
