AC Milan says forward Antonio Cassano has had successful surgery to repair a small opening in his heart.

The club said in a statement that the procedure was performed Friday by Dr. Mario Carminati, while Milan physician Rodolfo Tavana also was present.

Milan announced Wednesday that Cassano had a cardiac anomaly that impaired blood flow to his brain.

The 29-year-old Italian international has been hospitalized since Saturday, when he was taken for tests after falling ill on the team plane following the team's 3-2 victory over Roma.
