Cleared by FIFA! Manchester City won't be charged over Garre

FIFA has indicated that Manchester City not be charged or face penalties over the transfer of 16-year-old Argentine play maker Benjamin Garre.

After accusations of improper dealings, Manchester City have been cleared of signing a U18 player. Benjamin Garre is a promising young talent from club Velez Sarsfield. Barcelona and Manchester United both wanted to sign him to their development programs, but were beaten by City this past summer.

The Argentine club reported to FIFA that City had made contact when the player was only 15 years old, which is not allowed. However, Garre held an Italian passport through a parent and therefore was allowed to make such a move under specific FIFA guidelines.

The club for their part had done their homework and felt comfortable the entire time. Surely after losing out both Barcelona and United were urging on the sanction. As for Garre’s old club, they were likely hoping for a higher transfer fee after it was clear how much interest there was in the young attacker.

Garre is listed as a midfield, currently playing with Manchester City’s academy team. At still a young age Garre should be expected to complete another year or two in City’s development sides, before either going out on loan or getting a chance with the first team in the future.

While the headlines at the moment aren’t that Garre didn’t cause any sanctions from FIFA, let’s not forget the real story. A talented young player from Argentina has been secured by City and away from rivals.
