City boss Roberto Mancini managed the Chile international during his time at Inter, and the pair could be reunited at Eastlands.
Mancini has consistently said he expects no major arrivals this month, but the 32-year-old's arrival would give him midfield cover with Yaya Toure still on Africa Cup of Nations duty.
