Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has emerged as a doubt for Sunday's derby at Old Trafford.

The centre-half skippered City to defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday night, a result that left Manuel Pellegrini's side behind Manchester United going into the weekend.

But Pellegrini revealed at his pre-match press conference that Kompany will need assessing over the weekend.

"We'll see tomorrow if he can play or not," the City boss said. "It's better with Kompany but if he can't play, we have a squad."

That squad will also be missing two strikers on Sunday: Stevan Jovetic has a muscular injury, while Wilfried Bony is still not over the knee and ankle injuries that kept him out at Selhurst Park.

Dedryck Boyata is also injured, so Pellegrini is likely to pair Martin Demichelis with Eliaquim Mangala at the back if Kompany is ruled out.
