China's athletics team will be based in the northern English city of Leeds in the final buildup to the 2012 London Olympics.

Leeds Metropolitan University will be used by up to 50 athletes and officials to train and acclimatize before traveling to London. Leeds will also be hosting athletes from the United States, Serbia and the Netherlands.

The Chinese Athletic Association says it is ''confident Leeds will provide an ideal training base for our athletes as we prepare for the London 2012 Olympic Games.''

China topped the 2008 Beijing standings with 51 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze medals.
