Chile beats Venezuela in WC qualifier

Chile took over the lead in South American World Cup qualifying, winning 2-0 at Venezuela on Saturday as Matias Fernandez and Charles Aranguiz scored late goals.

Fernandez put the visitors ahead in the 85th minute and Aranguiz scored in the first minute of stoppage time.

In Saturday's other South American qualifier, Bolivia defeated visiting Paraguay 3-1 as Alcides Pena scored in the 10th minute and Pablo Escobar added goals in 70th and 80th minutes. Cristian Riveros scored in the 83rd for Paraguay.

Chile (4-2) has 12 points, followed by Argentina (3-1-1) with 10, and Uruguay (2-0-2) and Venezuela (2-2-2) with eight apiece. Colombia (2-1-1) is next with seven, followed by Ecuador (2-2) with six, Bolivia (1-4-1) and Paraguay (1-3-1) with four each and Peru (1-3) with three.

Uruguay hosts Peru on Sunday, and Colombia is at Ecuador. The top four nations qualify, and the fifth-place team advances to a playoff against as Asian opponent.

In the second round of African qualifying, Nigeria was held to a 1-1 tie at Malawi, South Africa drew 1-1 at Botswana and African champion Zambia beat Ghana 1-0 and Morocco tied visiting Ivory Coast 2-2 with a late goal. Tunisia won 2-1 at Cape Verde, and Senegal gave up an 85th-minute equalizer for a 1-1 draw in Uganda.

The 10 group winners in African World Cup qualifying will be drawn into five pairings for home-and-home series that will determine the continent's five qualifiers.
