Chelsea transfer grade highlights Paul Merson's buffoonery
Chelsea’s transfer business was given a very favorable grade by Paul Merson, but his reasoning combined with other grades are questionable.
With the transfer window being closed, numerous talking heads are spouting their ‘professional’ grades for each and every team. Paul Merson is one such talking head, but his grade for Chelsea should be a base indicator that he has assumed a buffoon-like status for his grades this time around.
Before we get into his other grades, let’s look at how he graded Chelsea. An A+, he says. Every good point can be defended, but he failed to defend his grade with any sort of logic. Have a look:
“I don’t think Marcos Alonso is good enough for Chelsea. Michy Batshuayi looks lively so far, and N’Golo Kante makes Chelsea the team to beat this season. David Luiz? No, no, no, no, no. Did you watch him play against Monaco last week? He gave away the silliest penalty I’ve ever seen and Paris Saint-Germain probably dropped him off. Having said that, I’m still giving them an A+ because I think Kante is that good.”
That’s right. Chelsea absolutely failed in most regards, but Kante is so good they get an A+. That’s completely illogical, especially when contrasted with how harsh he was on Arsenal, who accomplished one of their best transfer windows in recent memory. He referred to Lucas as insignificant because he hasn’t been called to play center forward for Spain. Newsflash: He has only been playing center forward for a year.
He again depicted his inability to properly digest this summer’s transfer business with his B- grade of Boro, which, as he points out, could drop to a D.

Why?
Because there are too many risks. Paul, this is Boro. They can’t sign bonafide, proven stars. Taking risks is what is going to make them this season. They can’t stand with Chelsea or West Ham in their pursuit of a striker. They have to get clever and thus far, Alvaro Negredo is proving to be quite the option. Securing Gaston Ramirez is another brilliant move.
Merson even completely disregarded Boro’s move for Victor Valdes, who was once the greatest keeper in the world. Compared to fellow promotees Hull City and Burnley, Boro did magnificent in their monetary investments and showed their ambition to stay in the top flight. Just because they cannot achieve the same level of proven signings that the big clubs can is no damnation of their business.
Merson’s grades are not only all over the place, but his defending of his grades are poorly researched. Better luck next time, Paul.
