Chelsea make most of United slip-up

Sir Alex Ferguson left Wayne Rooney out of his United squad for Saturday's early Premier League kick-off at Goodison Park to protect him from abuse from the Everton fans but it did not look as though the visitors had missed him after taking a 3-1 lead into the 90th minute. However, Tim Cahill's header put the Toffees back in the game in added time before Mikel Arteta rifled home a deflected leveller to snatch a 3-3 draw. Steven Pienaar had given Everton the lead but Darren Fletcher, Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov had seemingly turned the game on its head before the hosts' late rally. Chelsea made the most of their rivals' slip-up as West Ham's woeful start to the season continued with defeat at Upton Park. Michael Essien headed home a Didier Drogba corner just two minutes in and 15 minutes later it was 2-0 thanks to some comical Hammers defending. Robert Green inexplicably spilled Drogba's long-range free-kick and when Matthew Upson tried to hack it clear, he only succeeded in hitting the ball off Salomon Kalou's leg and into the net. Another Essien header made it 3-0 moments before Scott Parker's beautiful volleyed lob reduced the deficit. Frederic Piquionne was then guilty of a horrendous miss as Chelsea avoided the sort of dramatic finish United suffered. Arsenal are behind the Blues at the top of the Premier League after brushing aside Bolton 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium. Laurent Koscielny's well-taken goal gave them the lead before Johan Elmander's header for the Trotters before half-time. Marouane Chamakh restored the lead with a 58th-minute header before Gary Cahill was controversially sent off just after the hour mark for a foul on the Moroccan - after Bolton could have had a free-kick themselves. Alex Song's lovely chip and Carlos Vela's cool finish put the game beyond the Trotters. Unbelievably, Blackpool are fourth after continuing their fantastic start to the season with a 2-0 win at Newcastle. Charlie Adam's penalty gave Blackpool a half-time lead and while the Magpies battled for an equaliser, DJ Campbell showed excellent technique to convert a second in the closing stages. Two sides expected to launch sustained top-four challenges slipped up, however. At Eastlands, Manchester City could only draw 1-1 against Blackburn, Patrick Vieira sparing the blushes of Joe Hart with a second-half equaliser. Rovers had led after Hart and defender Kolo Toure both went for the ball and let in Nikola Kalinic to score in the 25th minute. However, City equalised 10 minutes into the second half through Vieira after good interplay with Carlos Tevez. Meanwhile Rafael van der Vaart was denied a winning start for Tottenham as they drew 1-1 at West Brom. Luka Modric's technically astute volley gave Tottenham a 27th-minute lead at The Hawthorns but Chris Brunt nodded home an equaliser before the break. Elsewhere, Sunderland's record signing Asamoah Gyan came off the bench to score at Wigan but Antolin Alcaraz's late equaliser denied him a winning debut. Gyan had brilliantly converted Jordan Henderson's sublime right-wing cross before Alcaraz scrambled home to make it 1-1. Black Cats skipper Lee Cattermole had been given a second silly red card of the season so far for two bookings within the opening 22 minutes. Fulham snatched a 2-1 home win over Wolves thanks to Moussa Dembele. Jelle van Damme gave Wolves a 10th-minute lead but summer signing Dembele equalised within four minutes of the restart as Fulham bucked up their ideas and looked to win it. Wolves' Christophe Berra was sent off late on before the former AZ Alkmaar striker rifled home a low free-kick in the last minute.
