The St. Louis Cardinals say that English soccer teams Chelsea and Manchester City will play an exhibition game May 23 at Busch Stadium.

It will be the first professional sporting event other than baseball to be held in the ballpark, which opened in 2006.

“Everybody is fired up about soccer in St. Louis,” said Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III. “For me, I think the fun part of this is showcasing Busch Stadium in a different way. We are honored to host this historic match.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for St. Louisans to see some of the best soccer players in the world.”

Manchester City also played in North America two years ago, before going on to win the Premier League in 2012. Chelsea won the European Champions League last year.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for the club to be able to return to America so quickly after the last tour,” said Chelsea Chief Executive Ron Gourlay in a press release. “We will face the strongest opposition in Manchester City and I am sure we will provide a competitive and entertaining match in St. Louis.”
