The Black Cats have emerged as contenders for a Europa League spot for next season and currently occupy sixth place in the Premier League. Bruce recognises the challenge of the resurgent Reds and knows European football could prove a significant lure in the summer transfer window. Sunderland are expected to invest some of the £18million received from Aston Villa for the services of striker Darren Bent, and he suggests he may look abroad. "The aim for us is to hang on in there now that Liverpool have mounted a challenge," Bruce told the Daily Star. "Make no mistake, the foreign players look at the Premier League and if you're struggling, it's very difficult to attract quality. "The higher up the table you are the easier it is and if we are playing in Europe next season, it would be a huge attraction. "Liverpool have galvanised themselves under Kenny [Dalglish] but we've got a chance." Key trio Danny Welbeck, Lee Cattermole and Michael Turner are currently sidelined through injury but Bruce is hoping his side can cope leading up to the end of season run-in. He said: "With so many injuries, the next five or six weeks are a big ask for this squad, but hopefully we can stay there or thereabouts before the charge in April and May when we'll have everyone back."
