MLS rookie Cordell Cato scored in the first half as the Seattle Sounders, three-time defending tournament champion, beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 Tuesday night in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal.

Cato, 19, scooped up a long pass that skipped through San Jose's defense and launched an 8-yard shot from a sharp angle to the right of the Earthquakes' goal. The ball slid through the legs of keeper David Bingham in the 19th minute.

It was the first goal as a member of the Sounders for Cato, a Trinidadian youth international.

The Sounders made the early goal stand despite second-half pressure from San Jose, which owns the MLS's best record. Seattle extended its Open Cup unbeaten streak to 17 and will host Chivas USA in a tournament semifinal July 10.

San Jose poured players forward after inserting Chris Wondolowski, the MLS's leading scorer, in the 53rd minute, but never could find an equalizer.

Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez unleashed a drive from the top of the penalty are in the 94th minute that deflected out of bounds, but San Jose's calls for a hand ball went unheeded.

Andrew Weber, whose contract option was dropped by San Jose this winter, got the shutout in his first Open Cup action this year.

In a game that grew more testy in the second half, Quakes forward Alan Gordon received a red card in the final minutes.

C.J. Sapong scored two goals, and Sporting Kansas City secured a 3-0 win against the Dayton Dutch Lions.

Graham Zusi also scored for Sporting, which will travel to meet the Philadelphia Union in the semifinals on July 11, and Jimmy Nielsen had to make just one save for his second straight Cup shutout.

Sporting, which last made the semis when it won its only Open Cup in 2004, broke open the game with two goals in a three-minute span in the second half.

Zusi's blast from just outside the penalty area made it 2-0 in the 56th minute, and Sapong's header in the 59th widened the lead to 3-0.

Sapong gave Sporting an early lead over the Dutch Lions, who play in the third-tier USL Pro, with a goal in the fifth minute.

Sporting center back Matt Besler started and played into the 68th minute after missing three MLS matches to recover from an emergency appendectomy.

Lionard Pajoy scored twice, leading the Philadelphia Union past the Harrisburg City Islanders 5-2.

Jack McInerney, Freddy Adu and Gabriel Gomez also scored for the Union, who led 3-0 at halftime.

Brian Ombiji and Morgan Langley scored for the City Islanders, who upset the New York Red Bulls in the fourth round. Harrisburg also defeated the New England Revolution on its way to the quarterfinals, marking the fifth time in six seasons it ousted an MLS team in this tournament.

Harrisburg plays in the US Pro Division.

Antoine Hoppenot was taken down in the penalty area in the 68th minute and Pajoy converted the penalty kick to seal the victory for the Union.

Langley's goal in the 54th minute had cut the Philadelphia advantage to 3-2.

The Union played without captain Carlos Valdes. The defender was given a red card in their fourth-round victory against D.C. United.

Jose Correa scored two goals, including the winner in the final moments, and Chivas USA advanced to the semifinals for the second time in franchise history with a 2-1 victory over USLPRO club Charlotte Eagles.

The Colombian forward delivered the opening goal in the 64th minute. Juan Agudelo fired a through-ball that sliced the Charlotte defense, allowing Correa to fire an uncontested shot.

Charlotte pressed forward late and found an equalizer just a minute from the end of regulation time. Jorge Herrera fired a shot that deflected off Chivas defender James Riley, falling for Mauricio Salles. He calmly slotted the shot past goalkeeper Tim Melia.

Correa then got his second goal 3 1-2 minutes into stoppage time, scoring off a sequence created by Laurent Courtois' free kick.
