Antonio Cassano will be able to return to Sampdoria on Feb. 1 but his wages will be cut by 50 percent.

Sampdoria had wanted to cancel the Italy striker's contract after he insulted club president Riccardo Garrone with a profanity-laced verbal tirade in the changing room in October.

But an arbitration panel called to resolve the dispute decided that Cassano would be banned without pay until 31 Jan.

Cassano signed a contract worth €5.36 million ($7 million) a season when he joined Sampdoria from Real Madrid in 2007, but the arbitration panel ruled he should receive half that until his contract ends in June 2013.

He was dropped for Italy's international with Romania on Nov. 17 and has been linked with a number of Italian clubs as well as Manchester City.

Prior to the argument, the former Bari and AS Roma player appeared to have put a tempestuous past behind him and helped the club qualify for this year's Europa League.
