Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul is confident he will be fit to start the new Premier League season.

Krul is currently recovering from a dislocated shoulder that he picked up in April which forced him to miss the final few weeks of last season.

The Dutchman, who has been linked with a possible move to Arsenal, is hopeful he be will ready to feature in a few pre-season games to prove his fitness ahead of their opening Premier League game against Manchester City on August 19.

"I will be fit for the first game of the season [against Manchester City]," said Krul.

"I'll try to get a couple of friendly games to get myself fully up to speed - and I'm right on schedule."

The 22-year-old has spent pre-season with the Cumbrians, but an agreement with Gateshead was not initially reached.

However, the two clubs have now agreed a fee and Gillies has signed a two-year deal.

"The clubs have worked closely together over the last few weeks to make sure we could resolve the issues amicably and we're pleased to say that is now the case," Carlisle managing director John Nixon said.

Sunderland-born Gillies, who joined Gateshead from Whitley Bay, scored 15 goals for Gateshead last season.
