Cagliari were forced to call off their upcoming Serie A encounter with Roma on Sunday after more problems with their new home ground.

The Sardinian club invited fans to the game on their website on Saturday despite previously being told by local authorities that it had to be played behind closed doors.

Cagliari have moved to the Is Arena on the outskirts of the city this season but it has been deemed unfit to host top-flight football despite recent improvements.

The Cagliari municipal government made the order to postpone the game late on Saturday after the club stated on their website that the stadium was ready to be used, in defiance of the previous order.

"Cagliari Calcio, represented by president Massimo Cellino and everyone who works for the club, can no longer see a future due to the bureaucratic difficulties and the collective disinterest of the authorities," read the statement.

"We invite and ask all their fans who have a ticket or season ticket to come to the stadium and watch Cagliari-Roma in the full respect of order and civility.

"Cagliari Calcio and its engineers consider the structure to be adequate and secure.

"This move is absolutely peaceful and was pushed by the pain and frustration of defending our right to exist."
