Cagliari and Fiorentina in stalemate

Cagliari and Fiorentina played out an uninspiring goalless draw in their mid-table Serie A battle at the Stadio Sant' Elia.

Neither goalkeeper had to work too hard to preserve his clean sheet in a match of few clear-cut chances, with a point apiece doing little for either team's hopes of climbing into the top half of the standings.

La Viola had the first sight of goal in the seventh minute when Adem Ljajic's right-footed shot from a tight angle was well saved by home keeper Michael Agazzi.

Artur Boruc in the opposite net also had to be alert two minutes later to keep out Andrea Cossu's close-range header from Francesco Pisano's cross.

Cagliari were asserting their authority more and more as the half wore on, and created the better of the chances in the remainder of the first period.

Cossu lashed just wide, while Joaquin Larrivey's left-footed blast was stopped by Boruc and Radja Nainggolan and Pisano were just off target with further efforts.

Agazzi needed to be on his toes on the stroke of half-time, however, to save a left-footed attempt from Andrea Lazzari, and then Riccardo Montolivo sent a right-footed shot just over the bar from Alessandro Gamberini's corner as the sides went in at the interval level.

Cagliari twice went close to breaking the deadlock just after the hour, Larrivey and Michele Canini both directing headers wide, before the visitors found their stride and finished strongly but were unable to unduly worry Agazzi.

Valon Behrami unleashed a right-footed drive from outside the box which flew over the bar, while Cesare Natali fired wide and substitute Acosty Boadu-Maxwell and Lazzari sent efforts high.

Nainggolan had half a chance to win it for Cagliari against the run of play a minute from time, but he too was off target with a left-footed shot.
