Lincoln were the more forceful side in the opening stages with winger Mustapha Carayol having a shot saved by Hereford goalkeeper Adam Bartlett before the Imps took the lead in the 18th minute. Ashley Grimes latched on to a long ball from Scott Kerr before racing into Hereford's penalty area to lob the ball over the top of Bartlett into the net. Hereford however levelled four minutes later when midfielder Rob Purdie took advantage of a Lincoln defensive mix-up to score from close-range. But Lincoln quickly regained the lead when Carayol latched onto a mistake by Michael Townsend before slotting past Bartlett from eight yards. Two minutes before the break Hereford should have levelled again when they were awarded a penalty but goalkeeper Joe Anyon made a fine diving save to stop Fleetwood's spot kick. But with five minutes remaining Manset made no mistake with his spot kick when he sent Anyon the wrong way to force a replay.
