Bulgaria wasted numerous chances as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 by Switzerland in a 2012 European Championship qualifier on Saturday.

The draw puts a big dent in both teams' hopes of reaching the tournament as they now have four points each from four games, while England and Montenegro top Group G with 10 each.

The match pitted Bulgaria coach Lothar Matthaeus against his former Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld, who now coaches Switzerland.

Bulgaria dominated most of the game, with Ivelin Popov, Blagoi Georgiev and Tsvetan Genkov all missing chances. Veteran Alexander Frei had the best chances for Switzerland but was twice denied by goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov, and later narrowly missed the target.

Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov nearly marked his 100th appearance for Bulgaria with a goal, but blasted the ball over from close range after receiving an excellent cross from Ivelin Popov.

Switzerland's next qualifier is a visit to England on June 6, while Bulgaria visits Montenegro on the same day.
