Brown: Pompey must stay positive
The midfielder insists they will be giving their all until the end of what has been a turbulent season. Pompey's relegation to the Championship was all but confirmed after the sanction - a first in Premier League history - left them on just 10 points, 17 from safety adrift with only nine matches left. Manager Avram Grant will gauge the thoughts of the squad ahead of Saturday's clash against struggling Hull at Fratton Park, with suggestions Pompey could field an under-strength side in protest. Brown sees no reason why the players should not treat it as business as usual - with an FA Cup semi-final date against Chelsea at Wembley on the horizon. "We will try to win the game, for sure. We have to be positive and give it our best shot," the midfielder said. "The nine-point deduction has come in now, which had been dragging on and we had sort of been waiting for it. "We are all very disappointed with that, but we have to go on now and win as many games as we can." Brown added: "It has been there for a while, and it was not as if we did not know it was coming. "The second we went into administration, we all knew it was going to be difficult not to receive the deduction. "We have been dealt that now, and have to move on, concentrating on tomorrow's game. "It is about ourselves - we are here to play for Portsmouth. "The supporters are going to be paying their money, and we will be trying to beat Hull. "They are a team around us and I am sure we can take the three points off them. "Hull will be raring to go and want to do well for a new manager. He will have them motivated and well organised, so it will be tough." Brown, 33, feels as professionals the Pompey players have to maintain their full focus for the remaining matches of the season. "All we can do is keep training hard and trying to show a good spirit. Generally, I think the boys have done that," he said. "In what has been a difficult situation, the lads have all kept their heads held high, and have kept trying to do the right thing." Brown added: "At this level, you are always trying to do your best every week. "Football can come and bite you back quite quickly if you are not doing that, so everybody is always trying to play well for their futures. "You have to do well for your club whenever you pull on the shirt." Brown insists Pompey can yet salvage something from the campaign by beating Chelsea and securing what would be a famous return to the FA Cup final. "Wembley is great, and is something to play for, to get in that team, and with some of the guys thinking about World Cup places, I am sure everyone will be on their toes," he said. "We have got a job to do until the end of the season, we have got a big semi-final coming up and all we can do is our best." Brown added: "The FA Cup is very important, because it would have been a long time to have nothing to play for. "However, we still have our pride and have to try to bridge that gap to get as many points as we can. "We will just have to keep going and be positive." Portsmouth hope to have England keeper David James available on Saturday following a minor calf problem. Grant said: "It is the same injury as before, but not so serious. "David James wants to play in every game - even the friendlies. "With David, you need to protect him from himself, because he wants to play all of the time. "He will be okay for the World Cup, don't worry."
