Substitute central defender Dante gave Brazil a 1-0 lead over Italy at halftime Saturday in the Confederations Cup.

In the first minute of added time, Dante sidefooted home when Gianluigi Buffon could only parry a header from Fred following Neymar's free kick. Dante appeared to be narrowly offside.

Dante had come on in the 34th for David Luiz, who exited with an apparent muscle problem.

Italy's only real opportunity came in the 17th when Mario Balotelli redirected a cross wide. Brazil dominated the half.

Italy lost two players to injury, Riccardo Montolivo after a knock to the head and Ignazio Abate holding his right shoulder.

Both teams have already advanced to the semifinals but the winner will finish first in Group A.
