Bordeaux puches USVA out early
Early goals from Jussie and Nicolas Maurice-Belay helped Bordeaux claim a 2-1 victory against 10-man Valenciennes.
Jussie opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Maurice-Belay doubled the lead five minutes later to put Bordeaux in complete control at the Stade Chaban-Delmas.
Valenciennes pulled a goal back through Foued Kadir just after half-time but the visitors' hopes of getting something out of the game suffered a big blow when they lost Nicolas Mirin to a red card soon after and they could not prevent a ninth defeat in 11 away league games this season.
The victory means Bordeaux have now done the double over VA this season - having been the only team so far to win at the Stade du Hainaut this term - and it lifts Francis Gillot's men up to ninth in the standings.
Les Girondins took the lead with the first decent chance of the match as Benoit Tremoulinas was played in down the left and his cross was clinically turned in by Jussie in the middle.
That was a great start for the home side, who had lost their last league match to Rennes prior to the winter break, and it was to get even better soon after when Maurice-Belay made it 2-0 following cross from debutant Mariano.
Valenciennes came close to pulling a goal back in the 20th minute but Carlos Sanchez saw his header cleared off the line by Tremoulinas and Mirin was denied by home goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso from the follow-up.
The away side had another effort cleared off the line at the start of the second half, Vincent Aboubakar this time denied by Tremoulinas, but they did manage to halve the deficit in the 54th minute.
Renaud Cohade's corner from the right was flicked on at the near post by Aboubakar and Kadir netted at the second attempt.
Valenciennes immediately went in search of an equaliser and Mirin thought he had got it when he headed home in the 61st minute, but that was ruled out for an offside.
Mirin's disappointment was then compounded two minutes later when he was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Maurice-Belay, and after his departure the 10 men of VA could not find a way through as they slumped to yet another away loss.
