Bolton wins 3-2 after Villa misses penalty
Aston Villa moved closer to the Premier League relegation zone after missing a second-half penalty and losing 3-2 to Bolton in the Premier League on Saturday.
Substitute Ivan Klasnic scored the winning goal for Bolton with only four minutes left after Ashley Young had failed to give Villa a 3-1 lead in the 70th from the penalty spot.
Darren Bent and Marc Albrighton twice put Villa ahead at Reebok Stadium only to be hauled back by a brace from Gary Cahill both sides of the interval.
Bolton then snatched its winner when Chung-yong Lee's deep cross from the left was headed back by David Wheater for Klasnic to blast home.
Bolton is provisionally in sixth place and continues to challenge for a European spot with 40 points, seven more than Villa. Both clubs have played 29 matches.
''I think the penalty was maybe a turning point,'' Villa manager Gerard Houllier said. ''We created so many chances we were cruising at one point and we could have been 4-1 or 5-1 up. In football you are a lucky manager when you have a performance and a result. Today we had the performance but not the result.''
Bent missed a clear chance in Villa's first attack in the fifth minute. He beat the offside trap to charge clear onto Ashley Young's through-ball only to totally mis-kick as he attempted to dummy Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Luke Young headed off the line in the 14th minute after Villa 'keeper Brad Friedel spilled a corner from Martin Petrov and Kevin Davies headed the ball goalwards.
But Bent made amends for his earlier mistake when he prodded Villa in front from point-blank range in the 15th after a superb run and cross from the right by Kyle Walker.
Bolton looked unthreatening until first-half injury time when Petrov swung in a corner from the left and Cahill rose highest to power home the equaliser.
Villa got the second goal their pressure deserved in the 64th minute when Stewart Downing raced down the right and crossed into the box where Albrighton swung a right-foot shot into the net.
Villa should have wrapped the game up when Young won the penalty kick after being barged by Wheater, but fired it straight at Jaaskelainen.
Villa were made to pay just five minutes later when a corner by Holden found Cahill, who saw his initial header saved by Friedel before blasting home the rebound.
''(Cahill) could play for any top team in world football,'' Bolton manager Owen Coyle said. ''With his age, Gary is only going to get better ... Gary could stand toe to toe with anyone.''
