Blues step up Davies chase

Davies, 25, looked poised to return to Leicester for a second spell on loan. But Blues are keen to strengthen defensively with Scott Dann ruled out for the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury. Liam Ridgewell has moved from left-back to partner Roger Johnson at centre-back for the past two games. But the only other cover is provided by Czech Republic international Martin Jiranek, who signed a one-year deal last summer. Former England Under-21 international Davies joined Villa from the Baggies three years ago in a £10million deal after an initial loan spell. He enjoyed his best spell alongside Martin Laursen before the Denmark international was forced to retire through injury. But the arrival of Richard Dunne and James Collins 18 months ago led to Davies slipping down the pecking order at Villa Park. He has also been linked with a loan move to Celtic but Birmingham appear favourites to sign him. Ridgewell and midfielder Craig Gardner also made the move directly from Birmingham to Villa amongst Alex McLeish's current squad.
