Blackpool-Man United match called off

Blackpool's home match against Premier League leader Manchester United was postponed Friday because of a frozen pitch.

The game, scheduled to be played on Saturday, was called off following an inspection of the playing surface at Bloomfield Road by match referee Peter Walton.

"Mr. Walton expressed concern that the severely affected areas of the playing surface would not thaw sufficiently for the game to be completed," Blackpool said in a statement.

Bloomfield Road doesn't have under-soil heating and stadium staff had been using hot-air blowers to try to thaw the pitch after temperatures in the northwest region dipped below minus 8 degrees Celsius (18 F) on Thursday night.

United moved to the top of the league last weekend but former leader Chelsea and Arsenal - who are both two points behind - can overtake with wins on Saturday. Chelsea hosts Everton and Arsenal is at home to Fulham.

Blackpool is in 11th place on 19 points.

The match was the first in this weekend's Premier League program to be postponed as a result of the cold snap that has swept through the country over the past week.

All six matches in the Scottish Premier League were called off during the week and a raft of lower-league games in England have also failed to beat the weather.
