Fletcher controversially texted a member of Craig Levein's backroom staff in February saying he no longer wished to be considered for international duty. Wolves boss Mick McCarthy claimed last week that Fletcher still wants to play for his country. But Berra feels the hitman will face stiff competition for a spot up front if he is reinstated, with Kenny Miller and Jamie Mackie scoring during Scotland's 2-1 friendly win over Cyprus on Friday night. The former Hearts skipper told the Daily Record: "Steven has said that what happened is in the past. I hope the slate has been wiped clean now. "Steven has been injured but if he starts banging in the goals then I don't see why he couldn't be back in the Scotland squad. He wouldn't walk into the team, though. "We have a lot of good strikers. Kenny scored a wonder goal against Cyprus then Craig Mackail-Smith came on and gave them such a hard time. "He's a real nuisance for defenders. We also saw the young boy Jordan Rhodes get involved so there is real competition for places." Berra believes a Scotland recall would benefit Fletcher's career, adding: "International football makes you a better player. It benefits you, your club and your profile. "If you play well on that stage - particularly at a major finals - then you could maybe get a bigger move. "You want to keep on pushing yourself to reach a higher level."
