Belgium beats Netherlands 4-2 in friendly
Belgium beat Netherlands 4-2 in a friendly between the two neighbors to spoil the coaching return of Dutch coach Louis van Gaal.
In a free-flowing game, Belgium's Dries Mertens scored one goal and set up two others late in the second half to turn a 2-1 deficit in a confidence-boosting victory for the Red Devils, who will be looking to reach their first World Cup in 12 years when qualifying open this fall.
Christian Benteke, West Bromwich Albion's Romelu Lukaku and Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen scored the other goals for Belgium while Luciano Narsingh and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of Schalke 04 scored for the Netherlands.
Van Gaal was appointed Netherlands coach to succeed Bert van Marwijk in the wake of the disappointing Dutch performance at the European Championship, where Oranje lost all three of its first-round games.
It was obvious the Dutch still had not fixed their defensive problems as the Belgians ran through for three easy goals late in the second half.
It made for a blissful full debut of Belgium coach Marc Wilmots, who had replaced outgoing coach Georges Leekens since late last season.
The Netherlands hosts Turkey and goes to Hungary next month to kick off its World Cup qualifying campaign. Belgium is traveling to Wales and hosts Croatia as it is seeking to clinch its first World Cup spot since 2002.
The game was played in front of some 50,000 fans at the King Baudouin stadium.
