Bayern Munich routs Cluj 4-0 in champions league
Mario Gomez's hat trick led Bayern Munich past FC Cluj 4-0 and into the Champions League knockout round on Wednesday.
Gomez opened the scoring in the 12th minute by pouncing on a rebound from Cluj goalkeeper Eduard Stancoiu. He nudged in his second from close range in the 24th off a pass from Bastian Schweinsteiger, and completed the hat trick in the 71st from another Schweinsteiger ball. Thomas Mueller finished the rout in the 90th from close range.
''A shameful score. They deserved victory,'' Cluj coach Sorin Cartu said.
Bayern, last season's runner-up, led the group with 12 from four matches. AS Roma had 6, and Cluj and Basel three each.
Bayern coach Louis Van Gaal relied on second-string players for its fourth Group E match, and took only 15 players to Romania. Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Miroslav Klose and captain Mark van Bommel were injured, forward Ivica Olic was out for six months to a knee injury, and defender Holger Badstuber didn't play because of a groin complaint.
Cluj played better for the first 20 minutes of the second half but still failed to score.
In the 48th, Curitiba Fraga Edimar set up Roberto De Zerbi, whose shot was deflected by defender Daniel Van Buyten.
Two minutes later, Cluj's Felice Piccolo hit the post.
In the first half, Emil Dica shot from 20 meters (yards) in the 10th, and in the 16th striker De Zerbi's free kick over the wall was saved by Jorg Butt.
Bayern's Andreas Ottl, Schweinsteiger, and Martin Demichelis were issued yellow cards, as was Cluj's Rafael Bastos and Lacina Traore.
Bayern won the home match against Cluj 3-2 with the help of two own-goals by the Romanian club.
Bayern has been winning in the Champions League but at home it sits 10 points behind Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund.
