Swiss champion FC Basel has signed Argentine forward Raul Bobadilla from league rival Young Boys after his scoring exploits in the Europa League.

Basel says the 25-year-old Bobadilla has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract. The transfer fee was not disclosed but Swiss media reports value the deal at 3.5 million Swiss francs ($3.8 million).

Bobadilla, who joined Young Boys last year from Borussia Moenchengladbach, scored five goals in the Europa League group stage. Only Napoli's Uruguay international Edinson Cavani scored more, with seven.

Because Bobadilla has already played in the competition, he is ineligible when Basel resumes its Europa League challenge next month against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the last-32 round.

The former River Plate junior is also unavailable to play in the Swiss League until March. Bobadilla is serving a seven-match suspension for insulting a referee after being sent off while playing for Young Boys.
