The German football federation says longtime captain Michael Ballack's Germany career is over.
The 34-year-old Bayer Leverkusen midfielder's future with the national team has been uncertain for months.
Germany coach Joachim Loew said Thursday that it was time for an ''honest and clear decision'' after many younger players broke into the national team.
Ballack, who has 98 caps, has not played for Germany in more than a year and missed seven months with an ankle injury, including last year's World Cup in South Africa, where Germany finished third.

The federation says it would like Ballack to play one final game as captain in an Aug. 10 friendly against Brazil.
