Away goals put Hamburg through
Away goals allowed Hamburg to advance to the round of 16 in the
Europa League despite losing 3-2 at PSV Eindhoven in their
second-leg match.
Hamburg advanced courtesy of its two away goals after last
week's 1-0 home win had meant the tie was level at 3-3 on
aggregate.
Ola Toivonen gave PSV the lead after just two minutes by
directing Balazs Dzsudzsak's cross into an empty net. Dzsudzsak
doubled the lead with a 25-meter free kick in the 43rd but Mladen
Petric pulled one back for Hamburg three minutes after the break,
beating goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson with a clever flick.
Piotr Trochowski, who provided the pass for Petric's strike -
the first PSV has conceded at home in the competition this season -
netted a penalty in the 79th to draw Hamburg level before
substitute Koevermans scored PSV's third in the 90th.
English referee Mike Dean dismissed Dzsudzsak in the 58th,
punishing the Hungary forward for dissent. Dzsudzsak had been
cautioned a minute earlier. Dean's next victim was Hamburg's Guy
Demel, who he sent off in the 74th after he picked up his second
yellow card.
Dean also cautioned eight more players in a tense match.
