Augusburg, Kaiserslautern fail to win
Augsburg and Kaiserslautern remain mired in the Bundesliga relegation zone after a 2-2 draw at the Augsburg Arena on Saturday.
Marcel de Jong gave the home team the lead in the fifth minute but Florian Dick levelled midway through the first half before putting Kaiserslautern in front early in the second.
Stephan Hain salvaged a crucial point for Augsburg in the 66th minute to lift the Bavarians off the foot of the table, at least until Freiburg travel to Mainz on Sunday.
Augsburg could hardly have hoped for a better start to the game as they took the lead in the fifth minute with De Jong's free-kick taking a deflection off the wall to beat Kevin Trapp.
Another free-kick led to the equaliser for Kaiserslautern in the 25th minute with Dick nodding in after Simon Jentzsch only managed to parry Jan Simunek's effort.
Dick almost scored again moments later when his free-kick forced a fine save from Jentzsch.
Sascha Molders wasted a great opportunity to put Augsburg back in front when he shot wide with only Trapp to beat just before the interval.
Another set-piece provided Kaiserslautern with the chance to go in front, and they took it with Dick scoring from close range after Konstantinos Fourtounis squared the ball from Christian Tiffert's free-kick.
With tensions rising both on and off the field, Kaiserslautern coach Marco Kurz was sent to the stands for getting too animated on the touchline.
Molders was guilty of another spectacular miss when he lifted the ball over an open goal after Trapp had spilled the ball in front of him.
Substitute Hain showed him how it should be done only a handful of seconds after entering the field as he beat Trapp with a composed finish.
Another glorious chance was missed by the hosts in the 81st minute with Marcel Ndjeng shooting wide of an open goal.
They were almost made to pay for their wastefulness in the last minute, but Jentzsch made a fine save to deny Sandro Wagner a goal on his debut.
